Thousands demonstrated on Tuesday in Quito to denounce violence against women as fallout continues following the murder of a pregnant Ecuadorean woman by her Venezuelan boyfriend on January 19th.

As reported by Reuters, abortion rights campaigners also joined the demonstration as Ecuador's National Assembly continues to debate legalizing abortion in certain instances, including cases of rape.

The first reported murder committed by a Venezuelan immigrant occurred on Saturday in the northern city of Ibarra since hundreds of thousands of refugees began arriving, fleeing an economic crisis.

The murder has put a spotlight on violence against women in the Andean nation with demonstrators saying rape, often carried out by someone known to the victim, largely goes unreported.
