Salma Hayek said on Tuesday September 10th that she refrains from using social media to comment on problems in her native Mexico because she wants to protect the country's image, according to AP.

During an appearance to promote her Netflix series "Monarca" about a family's tequila empire, the actress was asked why she doesn't use her social media presence to draw more attention to Mexico's woes.

Hayek commented that she doesn't believe a post on her Instagram account can change things because most of her followers don't live in Mexico.

At the same time, she added that she doesn't want to hurt her country as a critical post puts negative attention on Mexico elsewhere in the world, and "that can affect us with tourism, with people who are trying to invest in Mexico".

Salma Hayek has just celebrated her 53rd birthday on September 2nd by sharing her bikini body with the world.

Proving she’s got no problem with being another year older, the actress posted a swimsuit clad snap from a beach getaway on Instagram.

“Yes, tomorrow I turn 53. So!?” she wrote in the accompanying caption, hinting that age is merely a number as far as beach bodies are concerned.
