Manchester City won the FA Community Shield after beating Chelsea by two goal to nil at Wembley on Sunday August 5th.
The Premier League champions won the season’s opening contest after netting two goals by Sergio Aguero, who has extended his all-time scoring tally to 201 goals for the Citizens.
The 30-year-old Argentine scored the opener in the 13th minute after collecting the ball from the edge of the penalty area and shooting into the bottom corner.
As reported by AP, City’s second goal came from an outstanding counter attacking move that saw their centre-half John Stones win possession inside his own half, pass the ball to Ilkay Gundugan who then delivered the ball to Bernaldo Silva, before seeing Aguero net another sharp finish.
Reflecting on Aguero’s return from the World Cup, head coach Pep Guardiola said, “He arrived so sharp, so good… With him and Gabriel (Jesus) we are good in that position.
” Chelsea, on the other hand, seemed to be in the process of adjusting to a shift in formation after Maurizio Sarri became their new head coach after Antonio Conte’s departure.
"Our pre-season until now has been crazy," Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri said. "So we have to work."
The former Napoli manager is known for his attacking style of play and is on course for transforming Chelsea’s tactics from Conte’s 3-4-2-1 to his preferred 4-3-3 line-up.
While trying to bring the squad together in time for their domestic campaign, the 59-year-old has found himself in a situation that could see the FA Cup winners lose a number of their star players, including Eden Hazard, Willian and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
As for City, they appear to be in good shape for their title-defending season, especially after making former PFA Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez the latest addition to their star-studded squad.
Chelsea are travelling to Huddersfield for their opening game on August 11th, and City are set for a blockbuster show against Arsenal at the Emirates on the following day.
