Young Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu has joined RB Leipzig on a season-long loan deal on Monday, July 22, the Bundesliga side announced.
The club stated, “Ethan Ampadu becomes the fourth summer signing for RB Leipzig. The 18-year-old Welshman arrives on a one-year loan from Premier League side Chelsea FC”, according to the AFP.
Ampadu was signed from his hometown club, Exeter, at the age of 16 in 2017. He is highly rated at Chelsea and is seen a future star of the club. He has been learning from his senior colleagues in training, playing mostly in cup games for the club.
RB Leipzig are known for developing young talents into world-class players. Joshua Kimmich and Naby Keita passed through the team in recent years, and both ended up joining top European sides after enhancing their reputation. RB Leipzig also helped develop German striker Timo Werner, who still plays for the club.
Ampadu said that the club’s reputation for improving young players played a part in his decision to join them. “I have followed the club in recent years and have seen how well young players have developed here and how much potential this club has, so it’s the perfect step for me,” he said.
The Bundesliga side has seen an influx of young British players in recent years. Jadon Sancho had a breakthrough season with Borussia Dortmund last year. The 18-year-old attracted interest from Europe after a series of outstanding displays.
