At least 40 Ethiopians drowned en route by boat to Yemen and Saudi Arabia on April 6th, 2019. Three survivors broke the bad news on Tuesday, April 16th.
The survivors told Tigray Regional State of Ethiopia that the accident occurred when a boat used by smugglers to transport illegal migrants to Yemen sank in the Red Sea.
The catastrophe occurred near the Yemeni coast while the victims were heading to Saudi Arabia, which they hoped to reach via Djibouti and then Yemen.
All the victims were from the Atsbi Wenberta district of Tigray Regional State, and according to Woinshet Zelalem, the public relations head of the district, families of the victims have been informed about the deaths.
A candlelight vigil will be held at 6pm on Wednesday April 17th to honour the lives lost in the accident, she added.
