At least nine people were killed in clashes between armed groups and residents in the Semien Shoa area, 160 km north of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, officials have said.

The clashes started Saturday April 6th, and took place in neighbouring towns of Ataye, Majete and Karaqore, where clashes continued to claim lives, according to Getachew Bekele, the mayor of Ataye town.

The administrator of Efrata and Gidem, Demisew Meshesha, said people were killed by well-armed individuals who also attacked churches and other religious institutions.

Members of the defense force are reportedly being deployed in the conflict areas.
