Japan's Trade Ministry said on Thursday June 13th that the two oil tankers reportedly attacked in the Gulf of Oman near the Iranian coast carried "Japan-related" cargo.

Thursday's comment came as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was wrapping up a two-day trip to Iran with a mission to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington.

According to AP, no one has claimed responsibility or explained how the tankers were attacked.

Two tankers, the Marshal Islands-flagged Front Altair and the Panama-flagged Kokuka Courageous, had been evacuated and the crews were safe, four shipping and trade sources said.
