A call for integration among African nations was made on Thursday, February 7th by the chairperson of the latest session of the Executive Council of the African Foreign Ministers at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Reuters has reported.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the meetings held in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, the chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, urged AU members to intensify efforts for the realization of the African integration process.

Faki said that realizing the integration process is extremely urgent. Faced with the current rise of unilateralism in the world, the African continent must complete the integration process as soon as possible, thus achieving the unified development of the entire African continent.

"Our leaders have repeatedly emphasized their commitments to the integration process of the African continent. This is a matter of development across the continent. We must accelerate the implementation of the commitments. The rise of unilateralism leaves us with no choice. We must further stand firm," he said.

He also called on AU member countries to work hard for the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement. A total of 49 of the AU's 55 member states have so far signed the AfCFTA agreement.

"The progress of the Africa AfCFTA is very encouraging, at the current pace of ratification we can anticipate entering the agreement into force within the coming weeks," The AU chairperson told African foreign ministers, urging the six countries that are yet to sign the agreement to do it as soon as possible for the sake of Africa's future.

The two-day meetings will set the stage for the 32nd African Summit, during which Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El Sisi will receive the AU presidency. The two-day summit will be held from Sunday February 10 to Monday February 11.
