Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are interested in signing Leroy Sane from Manchester City this summer according to their chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
Sane has been one of Manchester City’s top stars since signing for the club in 2016 from Schalke. He scored 16 goals in 47 appearances last season as City became the first English side to win the domestic treble.
During the latter part of the season the 23-year-old found himself on the bench often as Pep Guardiola picked his preferred option of Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling in wide positions. The German was usually brought on from the bench but is thought to be growing frustrated at his bit-part role.
The BBC reported that Rummenigge admitted that the club would try and sign wingers to replace Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery who are both set to depart this summer. "We will try. I cannot promise whether it will succeed."
The chairman also claimed that the club had been interested in Sane before he had signed for Manchester City. "We already had the idea when he was still with Schalke," Rummenigge added. "But at that time, we did not have a guaranteed regular place for him. Robben and Ribery were top of the top three years ago."
After three successful seasons in Manchester in which Sane has won two Premier League titles, two League cups and one FA-cup, a return to the Bundesliga could entice the German who has only two years left on his contract especially with the AFP reporting that Germany’s manager Joachim Loew claimed it would benefit the national side.
"In my opinion, Leroy feels very comfortable at Manchester City. I don't know what he is planning," said Loew. "If the transfer did happen, it would be good for him and good for us."
