Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt on Monday 22nd July revealed that Britain wanted to establish a European-led maritime protection force in the Gulf but emphasised that London was not seeking a confrontation with Iran.

"We will now seek to put together a European-led maritime protection mission to support the safe passage of both crew and cargo in this vital region," Hunt told parliament after Iranian authorities seized a British-flagged tanker in the Gulf on Friday, AFP has reported.

Britain on Saturday urged Iran to de-escalate tensions in the Gulf by releasing a UK-flagged ship it said had been illegally seized in Omani waters in an "utterly unacceptable" gambit.

Hunt warned on Sunday that Iran would have to pay the price should it follow this course, and the price would be a larger western military presence along its shores, according to SkyNews.
