Cameroon’s Olympic national football team snatched their first victory in the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations after beating Mali 1-0 in the second round of Group A games on Monday, November 11th to claim a temporary lead of the group.
The Indomitable Lions started the tournament last week with a goalless draw with Ghana in the first round of Group A games, and then they defeated Mali in the second round to collect four points and lead the group.
Franck Evina, who plays for Bayer 05 Uerdingen in Germany, scored the victory goal for Cameroon 14 minutes before the final whistle to give his side the game’s points as well as the group’s lead.
Egypt is hosting the continental tournament from November 8th to 22nd with the participation of eight topflight African national teams vying for a place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The top three teams in the AFCON U-23 will represent the continent in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The eight teams are divided into two groups. Egypt, Mali, Cameroon, and Ghana are in Group A, while Nigeria, Cote d'lvoire, South Africa, and Zambia come in Group B.
Hosts Egypt will face Mali in the second round of Group A games late on Monday, November 11th.
Cameroon are in the driving seat of Group A with four points, one point over second-placed Egypt.
Cameroon are scheduled to face hosts Egypt on Thursday, November 14th in the final game of the group stage.
