The Cuban parliament unanimously adopted on Saturday the new draft constitution for the country, which recognises the market economy without abandoning the goal of building a communist society and will be put to a vote in a referendum on February 24, 2019.

The 560 deputies, including Raul Castro, the former president (2008-2018) and the first secretary-general of the Communist Party, placed the final touches on the text on the second day of their meeting.

"This constitution is an honest expression of the democratic and participatory nature of our people because it has emerged from it and expresses its spirit," said Umeiro Acosta, coordinator of the Constitution Drafting Committee.
