Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has canceled his planned speech to the nation in light of the "terrible fire" underway at Paris' Notre-Dame cathedral, said an official at the president's Elysee office.
The news came as the fire spread towards the giant spire of the cathedral, as crowds gathered in nearby squares.
The accident started on Monday afternoon when a spokesperson from the fire department said that a fire broke out at Notre Dame Cathedral in central Paris, without giving details or the cause of the blaze.
Smoke could be seen billowing out from the top of the medieval cathedral, as flames lept out besides its two bell towers, a Reuters witness said.
