Gulf unity is essential in confronting Iran, in confronting its influence, in countering terrorism writ large and, of course, in ensuring a prosperous future for the Gulf, said Morgan Ortagus, spokesperson of the US State Department, in a press conference held in the White House on May 30th. The US welcomes Saudi efforts to discuss Iranian threats in the region, said Ortagus, referring to the kingdom’s hosting of Gulf, Arab and Islamic summits in Mecca.

The White House spokesperson’s statement was issued as tensions between the US and Iran have been increasing since early May and after the US had despatched the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier with a B52 bomber task force to the Gulf and announced it was sending 1500 troops to the region in the face of Iranian threats.

Arab heads of state gathered on May 30th in the evening for the start of a trio of high-level summits in Islam’s holy city of Mecca as Saudi Arabia attempts to present a unified regional stance in response to the rise in tensions with its leading rival, Iran.
