An Indonesian militant who was shown killing a Japanese video journalist, Kenji Goto, in a 2016 Isis group video, was killed last month in a battle with US-backed forces in Syria, Indonesian police and a family member said Monday February 11th.

National police spokesperson Dedi Prasetyo said Monday that Muhammad Saifuddin, who used the aliases Abu Walid and Mohammed Karim Yusop Faiz, was killed by shrapnel on January 29th in eastern Deir Ezzor province.

However, Saifuddin's older brother, Muinudinillah Basri, said the family did not receive official information about Walid's death but saw a photo of his body and recognised him.

Saifuddin appeared in several videos on radical websites, including a 2016 video that showed him along with two other militants from Malaysia and the Philippines killing three foreigners, including Japanese journalist Goto.
