Substitute Michy Batshuayi's late strike gave Chelsea a 1-0 victory away at Ajax on Wednesday October 23rd. The victory takes Chelsea top of Group H as Frank Lampard's side stretch their winning run to six games.
The Blues had their chances inside the first half-hour as Mason Mount had a shot saved by goalkeeper Andre Onana before Callum Hudson-Odoi fired an effort wide of the target in the 26th minute.
Soon after, Quincy Promes had a goal ruled out for offside after slotting in from Hakim Ziyech's cross. The referee questionably upheld the decision to rule out the goal after checking VAR.
In the 38th minute, a last-ditch tackle from Cesar Azpilicueta denied Promes a goal just before half-time.
The game continued in the second-half as Ajax were inches from taking the lead just before the hour mark as Promes's corner was headed against the post by Edson Alvarez.
Batshuayi came off the bench for Tammy Abraham in the 70th minute, and the Belgian striker almost scored with his first touch.
Christian Pulisic's shot was deflected into the 26-year-old's path, and he disappointingly fired over the bar.
Chelsea finally got the deserved goal in the 86th minute. Pulisic ran at the Ajax defence before firing a low cross for Batshuayi to strike successfully as the Blues snatched a late victory in Amsterdam.
AFP reported that Chelsea head coach Lampard said that win was massive. "It's feels huge, which always scares me because there's a lot to do. We're entitled to be excited about the way we played tonight," Lampard told reporters.
"That's the blueprint. No excuses from now to dip from that."
