Mexican Foriegn Minister Marcelo Ebrard said in a news conference on Monday, November 11th, that his country has granted asylum to Bolivian president Evo Morales who resigned today, AFP reported.
Ebrard said Morales has formally requested political asylum in Mexico, which was approved by Mexican Interior Minister Olga Sanchez Cordero.
The Legislative Assembly of Bolivia received a resignation letter from Morales on Monday after he announced that he would step down a day earlier.
Morales stepped down after the head of the army publicly called on him to resign as tensions rose following his disputed re-election last month.
He has been the country's president since 2006.
