At least 17 people died in a fire early on Tuesday, February 12th, at a hotel in the western part of the Indian capital of New Delhi. Another four were left injured after the blaze, AP has reported citing police officials.

The fire at the budget Arpit Palace Hotel has been extinguished, but authorities are still investigating what sparked it, Deputy Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Randhawa said.

"We have to check the stability of the structure, check every room," Randhawa said.

The hotel is located in Karol Bagh, a busy area in New Delhi popular with tourists and full of shops and budget hotels.

Twenty-five fire engines battled the blaze, which had engulfed all but the ground floor of the five-story hotel, fire officer Vijay Paul said.

"We have confirmed with hospital authorities, the toll is now 17 including a child," Sunil Choudhary, a fire brigade official, told AFP.

About three dozen people were rescued from the hotel, Paul said.
