Yesterday was World Emoji Day, and to celebrate, Apple released some details about which new emojis will be coming to iOS a little later this year.
According to Apple, more than 70 new characters will be included in an iOS 12 update.
Included in the new animals category are a kangaroo (finally), a parrot, and a lobster. The latter, everyone seems to believe, has always been there, but actually remained a significant absence.
There are also new foods, such as a mango, a cupcake, a head of lettuce (for the days when you just want to describe your salad), and a moon cake.
Among the new yellow faces is a pleading face, a face surrounded by hearts and one that I will be using a lot in winter, the teeth-chattering freezing face.
“Many additional characters across sports, symbols, and more, will launch later this year, including a new superhero emoji, a softball, nazar amulet, and infinity symbol,” Apple said in a blog post.
There has been no solid date for the release, only that these emojis will be included in an update to iOS 12 sometime this autumn.
Facebook and Messenger are also celebrating the blessed emoji day, revealing a bunch of stats about how folks all over the world use emojis on both platforms. According to Facebook, the favourite emoji in the UK is the laughing crying face.
