One person has died in the escalating demonstrations in Sudan over high prices and a liquidity crunch, which have spread to the capital Khartoum on December 20th, eyewitnesses said, according to Reuters.

Police fired tear gas at protesters near the presidential palace in Khartoum as well as in a suburb of the Sudanese city of Atbara after hundreds of protesters took to the streets, chanting anti-government slogans and demanding the fall of the regime.

The incident in which one university student was killed occurred during protests in the Sudanese city of al-Qadarif, a member of parliament said.

Protests against price increases that started in the city of Atbara in north-eastern Sudan on December 19th quickly spread to al-Qadarif as well as Khartoum and other cities.
