The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, in a Tuesday meeting with the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said that the Kremlin would ‘react positively’ and be welcoming an official request by Washington for a meeting to be held between the US and Russian presidents at a G20 summit this June.
"If such a proposal is submitted officially, we will certainly react positively to it," Lavrov said after US President Donald Trump said that he is expecting to meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the summit in Osaka.
Pompeo says he urged Russia to show that election interference is a 'thing of the past'.
Regarding the critical situation regarding the US presidential election, Pompeo warned Russia from interfering in the next election, adding that Moscow should show that its alleged meddling is over and done with.
Hence, if Russia interferes in the 2020 election, "it would put our relationship in an even worse place," Pompeo stated at a joint news conference with Lavrov, calling on Russia "to demonstrate that these types of activities are a thing of the past".
On the other hand, Lavrov dismissed these collusion claims by describing them as ‘absolute fiction’, referring to speculations that Trump colluded with Moscow during his election campaign.
"It's clear that such insinuations are absolute fiction," he said after talks with his US counterpart Mike Pompeo.
The meeting further discussed cooperation between the two countries. Pompeo said to Russia’s Foreign Minister that Trump is 'committed to improving this relationship'.
Also, the Secretary of State elaborated, Trump wants to find ways to cooperate with Moscow, as he opened talks with the Russian leadership.
"I am here today because President Trump is committed to improving this relationship," he said as he started a meeting with Lavrov in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
