Alexandre Bissonnette, the young Canadian who killed six worshipers at the Quebec City mosque in January 2017, was sentenced to life in prison on Friday, reports AFP.

The young man has been sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 40 years.

The prosecution's lawyers were asking for a 150-year-old exemplary sentence behind bars against Alexandre Bissonnette, but this request was described as "unreasonable" by Judge François Huot.

The magistrate, in his verdict, emphasised that the "visceral hatred of immigrants of Muslim faith" fueled the murderer, who will not be able to apply for parole until he is 67 years old.
