Manchester United started their season with a 4-0 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 11th. A brace of goals from Marcus Rashford as well as a goal apiece from Anthony Martial and debutant, Daniel James, gave the Manchester club a thumping victory in their opening game of the season.

Chelsea started the game strongly and almost took the lead immediately. Tammy Abraham rattled a fierce shot against the post in the third minute. Cesar Azpilicueta fired wide soon after as the west London side began to dominate.

United were given a penalty in the 17th minute after Kurt Zouma brought down Rashford in the area. Rashford stepped up and slammed the penalty into the top left corner to give his side the lead against the run of play.

United seemed to come to life following the goal as Martial came close to adding to the lead on the half hour mark. Chelsea started to get back into the game late in the half as Ross Barkley shot wide of the goal. Minutes later, United goalkeeper, David de Gea, produced a stunning double save to keep out Barkley as well as a follow-up from Jorginho.

Chelsea bad luck continued as they hit the post for the second time in the match just before half-time. Emerson’s low drive rattled the post as United managed to go into the break a goal up.

Half time score: Manchester United 1 Chelsea 0

United started the second-half well and increased the pace as Martial and Rashford put pressure on the Chelsea defence. The hosts were rewarded with the second goal just after the hour mark. Andreas Pereira’s low cross was bundled into the back of the net by Martial to put the Red Devils two up.

Minutes later. They got their third as Paul Pogba’s pass split the Chelsea defence, allowing Rashford to slot in the third. A counter-attack led to debutant, Daniel James, getting the fourth late on after latching onto a pass from Pogba and striking the ball into the net for his first goal at the club.

AFP reported that the £80m new signing, Harry Maguire, who was given Man of the Match on his debut said. "It is a great start for myself and the team. We rode our luck a bit first-half but second, we were much more ourselves," Maguire, who became the world's most expensive defender in the summer, concluded, "We knew there were only two clean sheets last year here (at Old Trafford). We need to make it a fortress."

Chelsea manager. Frank Lampard, rued his side’s errors during the game. “Four mistakes for the goals but we controlled major parts of the first-half,” he said. He went on, “We hit the woodwork, (made) poor decisions in the final third, we should have been in the lead at half-time.” Assessing Manchester United’s qualities, he said, "They are a counter-attacking team, it’s a big strength, they have pace and if you give them opportunities they will counter. For massive parts of the game we didn’t allow them to do that. (There are) loads of lessons for us."

Final score: Manchester United 4 Chelsea 0
