The Russian Foreign Ministry says Paul Whelan, the American detained in Moscow on suspicion of spying, may receive visits from diplomats from the three other countries whose citizenship he holds.
Last week, it emerged that he also holds British, Irish and Canadian citizenship. US Ambassador Jon Hunstman Jr has already visited him in prison, as reported by AP.
According to the Russian news agency TASS, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, "As of now, only representatives from the United States have visited Paul Whelan upon a request. The US side has not contacted the Russian side on that matter anymore. Other countries Paul Whelan has been confirmed to be a citizen of have asked for a permission to visit him."
She also stressed, "If the arrested man says that he has no objections against such visits, that he needs them, that he wants them, so, they will be organised when convenient for all the sides."
