The son of former German President Richard von Weizsäcker has died despite efforts to save him, after he was stabbed in Schlosspark hospital in western Berlin, AFP cited a police spokesman as saying on Wednesday November 20th.
The suspect was arrested at the scene after being overpowered by people nearby. Another person, an off-duty police officer, was seriously injured in the attack, according to German state-owned DW.
No motive for the attack has been announced.
Fritz von Weizsäcker, a 59-year old doctor, was attacked while giving a lecture that he had delivered at the hospital in the Charlottenburg neighbourhood. He was a father of four children.
Further details about the incident are expected to be released later, as police announced the opening of an investigation.
President Richard von Weizsäcker died in 2015. He served as president of West Germany for six years from 1984, and also served as the president of the reunited Germany from 1990 to 1994.
