The suspect in the Paris apartment fire that caused the death of ten people this week was handed preliminary arson charges, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.
The suspect was found to be a woman who has a history of mental illness, whereby she was hospitalised at least 13 times in the past decade for mental health related issues. As a result, she was placed in provisional detention Friday night, February 8th.
In the aftermath of the fire in the Paris apartment building, 96 people were injured in the blaze, including eight firefighters.
Meanwhile, the suspect had been sent to a police psychiatric infirmary for psychological evaluation. Police say she indicated during the first part of her detention that she was not behind the fire early Tuesday February 5th, that was the deadliest in Paris since 24 people died in a 2005 hotel fire.
