President Donald Trump said he will be making a major announcement from the White House, on the government shutdown and the southern border, on Saturday 19th January, as the political stalemate continues into its fifth week.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cancelled her plans to travel by commercial plane to visit US troops in Afghanistan, after Trump banned her from using a military aircraft, part of the ongoing bitter clashes between Trump and Pelosi.

Nine of the 15 Cabinet-level departments have not been funded, including Agriculture, Homeland Security, State, Transportation, Interior and Justice. An estimated 460,000 employees are working without pay, including federal law enforcement agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Transportation Security Administration.

The Democratic governors of Michigan, New York and Washington have asked the Trump administration to let states offer unemployment benefits to federal employees who are working without pay during the partial government shutdown that began nearly a month ago.
