Detectives arrested Saman Dissanayake, secretary and third in command of Sri Lanka’s National Police Commission, on Thursday over his alleged involvement in a multi-million-dollar gunrunning racket. They have asked for international help to trace four other suspects, AFP reported

According to police spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekera, Dissanayake, was taken into custody at a state hospital, adding that another key suspect, Damayanthi Jayaratne, also a former secretary to the ministry of defence, is believed to have fled the country along with three other suspects.

According to attorney Nishara Jayaratne , at the time of the offence Dissanayake was a top official in the defence ministry under Sri Lanka’s then-president Mahinda Rajapakse. He had exhausted his attempts at securing anticipatory bail and could now be arrested. He added that it was not immediately clear if Dissanayake was in the country,thenews.com.pk reported.

Gotabhaya Rajapakse however is accused of defrauding the government of millions of dollars while he was the top government defence representative. He is accused of transferring the navy’s contracts for providing armed protection to international shipping to a private firm. He is also facing several other criminal charges but is currently on bail and is said by his lawyers to be in Singapore recuperating after heart surgery, according to AFP.

Gotabhaya is due in court next week in connection with another embezzlement case, while his partner Saman Dissanayake was ordered to appear in court by Friday.
