President Donald Trump said the USS Boxer, a US Navy ship, had destroyed an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, July 18th, in the latest escalation of military tensions in the Gulf area.
"The drone was a threat to the ship and its crew by flying to within 1,000 yards of it," Trump added in a statement from the White House.
"The USS Boxer took defensive action against an Iranian drone which had closed into a very, very near distance, approximately 1,000 yards, ignoring multiple calls to stand down and was threatening the safety of the ship and the ship’s crew," he clarified.
Trump called on other countries to condemn Iran and protect their own ships.
These comments have come as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high over a spate of attacks on cargo ships, the downing of an American drone, and the British seizure of a tanker carrying Iranian oil.
