The United States on Thursday, October 31st accused Russia of inflaming tensions in Chile by spreading false news and causing clashes that resulted in the death of more than 20 people in civil unrest.
The White House referred to foreign hands in a statement on President Donald Trump's call to his counterpart Sebastian Pinera on Wednesday, October 30th. During that call, the latter cancelled a major summit of Pacific Rim powers and a climate change conference over the upheaval, AFP reported.
The White House said, "President Trump denounced foreign efforts to undermine Chilean institutions, democracy, or society."
A senior State Department official accused Russia exploiting debate in Chile "and skewing it through the use and abuse of social media – trolling," according to Naharnet.com
"They have sought to exacerbate divisions, foment conflict, and all around act as a spoiler to responsible democratic debate," the official told reporters on condition of anonymity.
The official said that Russia has been stepping up its influence in South America with "very little of it positive."
