Veteran diplomat and the United States Special Representative for Syria Engagement, James Jeffrey, is also taking on the role of US envoy to the anti-Isis international coalition, the State Department announced on Friday January 5th.

With this additional responsibility, Ambassador Jeffrey will be leading and coordinating US Department of State's relations with the Global Coalition to defeat Isis, as well as the department's efforts to implement President Trump's policy of a US troop withdrawal from Syria, according to a statement by Department deputy spokesperson, Robert Palladino.

Jeffrey, a former US ambassador to Iraq and Turkey, will replace Brett McGurk as anti-Isis envoy, a post he resigned from following President Trump's controversial decision in December to pull out US troops from Syria. The December 21st announcement of McGurk's departure followed that of Jim Mattis, who quit as Secretary of Defence over fundamental disagreements with Trump, including over Syria.
