Tottenham kept up the pressure on Chelsea in the race for the Champions League spots after securing a late win over Wolves on December 15th.
The game looked set to end in a 1-1 draw before Vertonghen headed in late from a corner to give his side all three points.
Spurs took the lead just eight minutes into the game. Lucas Moura dribbled past two Wolves defender to get in the box and score into the roof of the net to put his team ahead.
Wolves attempted to equalise almost immediately as Adama Traore forced Paulo Gazzaniga into a save before Raul Jimenez fired an effort wide of the goal.
Towards the end of the first half, a mistake by Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio almost led to a second goal as Eric Dier struck an effort against the post.

Dele Alli fired an effort inches wide early in the second half as the visitors looked to extend their lead. Despite Spurs's strong start, it was Wolves who managed to score an equaliser after Traore struck in a fierce effort from the edge of the box in the 67th minute.
Wolves almost won it late on as Romain Saiss's header was brilliantly saved by Gazzaniga. Tottenham snatched victory in injury time after Christian Eriksen's corner was headed into the back of the net by Jan Vertonghen.

The victory moves the north London side up to fifth in the table just three points behind fourth-place Chelsea. AFP reported that Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho praised his side for the hard-fought victory.
"Three incredible points. We coped with their spirit. At 1-1, Wolves are not a team satisfied with a point. But we knew if we arrive in the last part of the match we could score," Mourinho said.
