A harsh weather front brought sandstorms, hail and rain to parts of the Middle East on Wednesday 16th January, with low visibility in Cairo, AP reported.

Dusty winds are blowing through Israel and the West Bank as well and meteorologists expect snow later in the day in Jerusalem. The city is preparing for its first snowstorm in years, as the authorities plan to close major highways, with many local schools and universities closing early.

The winds in Cairo reached more than 50 km per hour (30 miles per hour), bending palm trees along the Nile. Egypt’s Meteorological Commission has urged caution but has not advised people to change their daily routines.

In Libya, rain, wind and cold weather have caused power cuts due to increased demand for electricity.

At this time of the year, in late winter and early spring, sandstorms are common in the region.
