Brazil's new president Javier Bolsonaro said on Sunday that "good will overcome evil" as he oversees an army campaign against gangs wreaking havoc in the northeast of the country, in addition to the killing of a policeman in Rio de Janeiro.

Bolsonaro, on Twitter, offered his condolences to the family of the policeman, who was shot dead Sunday morning during a crackdown on a gang that was robbing drivers in Rio de Janeiro.

"The law imposes on the legislative, executive and judicial authorities together to give assurances that good will overcome evil," Bolsonaro said, expressing his regret at the way in which the security forces and citizens targeted by criminals had turned to statistical figures.

Bolsonaro’s remarks came during his supervision of the deployment of 300 federal troops in the city of Fortaleza and the surrounding towns in the northeastern state of Ceara over the weekend to tackle a wave of crimes by gangs.
