Brazil’s president-elect has said he will follow through on a campaign promise to loosen the country’s strict gun laws.
Jair Bolsonaro has said he will issue a decree, on taking office, that will guarantee citizens without a criminal history will be allowed to own firearms. The statement appeared in a December 29th post on Twitter.
Bolsonaro is a former captain in the country’s military and will take office on January 1st, 2019.
The possession of firearms in Brazil is tightly controlled. Civilians are required to pass through a long process and the sale of weapons is limited to small calibers.
According to AP, a 2005 referendum asked Brazilians if the sale of firearms should be banned. Almost 64% of the population voted against the measure.
