The Turkish president warned Tuesday of "reckless" oil and gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean off the coast of Cyprus, adding that this poses a threat to Cyprus and Greece, reports AFP.

In recent weeks, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stepped up his rhetoric about oil and gas exploration off the coast of Cyprus, which has been divided for more than four decades between the internationally recognised Greek south and the northern Turkish side, which Ankara recognises only.

"The reckless behavior of Greece backed by European countries in cooperation with the Greek Cypriot administration poses a danger and, above all, a threat to themselves," Erdogan told a meeting of deputies of his ruling party in Ankara.
