EU Cancels Funds for Turkey over Rule of Law

The European parliament’s budget committee has cancelled €70 million in pre-accession funds reserved for Turkey because it failed to meet conditions to improve the rule of law.

Hurriyet Daily News reported that the Parliament and European Council had decided last November to place in reserve €70 million in pre-accession funds for Turkey on condition it made measurable, sufficient improvements in the rule of law, democracy, human rights and press freedom.

The Commission’s annual report on Turkey, published on April 17th, showed, however, that it had been “moving away from the European Union, in particular in the questions of the rule of law and fundamental rights and through the weakening of effective checks and balances in the political system.”
