Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, on Friday, December 13th sent a cable of congratulations to new Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for his victory in the presidential election, UAE’s news agency WAM reported.
UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, had also sent similar cables, according to Al-Bayan newspaper.
Tebboune garnered 58% of the vote, which is enough to prevent a second round. Turnout was just 40%, the electoral body's head said in a televised news conference in Algiers.
The election had been opposed and boycotted by a large protest movement that sought the ballot put off until the entire ruling elite step down and the military quits politics, Euronews reported.
