Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has said that Christian Eriksen will play in the FA Cup Replay against Middlesbrough on Tuesday, January 14th, despite transfer rumours linking him with a move to Inter Milan this month.
The Danish midfielder’s contract with the club expires at the end of the season, and since last summer, he has been linked with a move away from the club.
Rumours spread that he was set to join Manchester United or Real Madrid, but he ended up staying at the north London club.
Eriksen signed for the club from Ajax in the summer of 2013, and despite never winning a trophy in six years, he has been a shining player for the club. Following the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend, the 27-year-old seemed emotional as he waved goodbye to the Spurs fans.
Media reports suggested that he had agreed to terms with Inter Milan on a pending transfer, but AFP reported that Mourinho confirmed that Eriksen will play against Middlesbrough on Tuesday.
"He plays tomorrow. After that I have a match on Saturday and he maybe plays on Saturday again. I cannot tell you much more than that," Mourinho said in the pre-match press conference.
The transfer rumours may have affected Eriksen’s form, as the Danish international has underperformed in the past few weeks.
As Eriksen’s current contract is set to run out in the summer, it may well be beneficial for the Spurs to sell him before the end of January rather than risk losing him for free in the summer.
