Police in the Comoros used tear gas on Monday to disperse demonstrators led by opposition leaders in protest at what they said was an unfair presidential election, reports Reuters.

Opposition candidates said that Sunday's vote was marred by irregularities, including the banning of independent observers and the marking of ballots before the vote began, which the government firmly denies.

Around 300,000 voters took part in the Indian Ocean archipelago with a population of 800,000 and the Independent Electoral Commission is expected to announce the results on Monday.
