Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has supervised military exercises near Crimea on Thursday January 9th, of the country’s advanced military weaponry, including one of the latest in its nuclear arsenal.
This included the launch of cruise and hypersonic missiles, and also the launch of the supersonic Kinzhal missile, Russia’s TASS news agency reported.
Russia had deployed its first hypersonic missiles with nuclear capabilities at the end of December, Reuters reported.
The Kremlin said Russia's supreme commander was on board the cruiser, Marshal Ustinov, to watch the joint exercises of the North and Black Sea fleets, according to AFP.
The drills in the Black Sea included frigates, a large anti-submarine ship, as well as a submarine, large landing ships, and missile launchers guided by rapid attacks, while fighter planes and bombers participated.
"Two of the MiG 31K Interceptors aircraft fired Kinzhal missiles at a target in one of the test ranges," the Kremlin said.
Putin has repeatedly touted the Kinzhal missile, which was first unveiled as part of a group of next-generation nuclear weapons, during his annual State of the Nation address in 2018.
