Sri Lanka Starts Presidential Polls, Gunmen Open Fire on Voters

Sri Lankans on Saturday November 16th started presidential polls to choose between Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the brother of the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, and Sajith Premadasa, a minister in the current United National party (UNP) government, AFP reported.

Few hours before the polls started, gunmen opened fire on a convoy of more than 100 buses carrying minority Muslim voters, but no causalities were immediately reported, police said.

As many as 85,000 police is securing the elections, which would extend for ten hours, an election commission official said
