More than 600 swimmers from 13 countries took part in one of Russia’s most scenic and historic settings on Sunday August 12th, circling the St. Petersburg island that holds the Peter and Paul Fortress.

The distance of circuit was 2.3 kilometres (1.42 miles), which the swimmers around the iconic site noted from the needle-thin golden church spire. It is considered a tough swim not only because of the length, but also for the strong currents and seaweed in the Neva River.

One of the citizens of St. Petersburg commented, “It was not a physical challenge for oneself but also an unforgettable experience of swimming in such a beautiful historical location where swimming is normally restricted."
