A huge fire in the forests of the Greek island of Zakynthos fanned by strong winds has forced the evacuation of residents from two villages, Reuters reported on Sunday September 15th.
There were no reports of casualties and winds were not expected to subside until Tuesday.
"We have evacuated about 300 residents and tourists from the villages of Kerry and Agalas as a precaution," a fire department spokesman told Reuters.
"The fire broke out near the houses."
Zakynthos Island is about 300 km west of Athens.
More than 100 firefighters fought the fire backed by 28 fire engines. Two helicopters and four water-pumping aircraft were involved in the operation earlier on Sunday.
Another forest fire broke out in Loutraki, 80 km (50 miles) from Athens, and the fire brigade said it had been called in to put out more than 70 fires in the past 24 hours.
